Questions and answers

How do I share a song?

A grown-up needs to turn sharing on first (see the next question). Then:

  1. Tap the ▾ next to the song's name to open My songs, then tap Share this song.
  2. The first time, Birdband shows a short reminder about sharing safely. Tap Got it!
  3. “Does your friend have Birdband?” Tap Yes!, then pick Quick Share and your friend's phone. Their phone needs to be close by, with Quick Share turned on. You can also pick another app, such as messages or email.
  4. If your friend doesn't have Birdband yet, tap Not yet: they scan the code with their camera to find it on Google Play. Then share the song again.

Songs from friends are always free to play.

How do I turn sharing on? I forgot my PIN.

Sharing starts off. To turn it on, open For grown-ups (at the end of the My songs list, or from the “Ask a grown-up to turn on sharing” message). Enter your year of birth, then choose a 4-digit PIN and type it twice. You'll need the PIN to change these settings later. If you like, also turn on “Ask for my PIN every time a song is sent”.

Forgot the PIN? Tap Forgot PIN? on the PIN screen, answer the year-of-birth question again and choose a new PIN.

After a few wrong tries, Birdband asks you to wait a minute before trying again. Turning sharing off never needs the PIN.

It says “The microphone is off”.

Birdband needs the microphone to hear your child sing. If the permission was turned down, a grown-up can turn it back on:

  1. Open your phone's Settings. (In Birdband, the Open Settings button does this, after the grown-up check.)
  2. Go to Apps → Birdband → Permissions → Microphone.
  3. Choose Allow (on some phones: “Allow only while using the app”).

The words can differ a little between phones. Songs still play without the microphone.

A friend sent me a song. Where is it?

When a song arrives with Quick Share, tap the notification to open it: Birdband saves it in My songs. If it opened in another app, or you can't find it:

  1. Open the Files app and look in Downloads for a file whose name ends in “(Birdband song).birdband”.
  2. Tap it and choose Birdband.

Birdband adds it to My songs. Getting the same song twice doesn't make a copy.

What's free, and how does the unlock work? How do I restore my purchase?

Your child can make one whole song of their own for free, with everything. Playing songs from friends, changing their volume, and sharing songs on are always free.

Making more songs, and changing songs from friends, needs the unlock: a one-time purchase ($3.99 in the U.S.; Google Play shows your local price), with no subscription. A grown-up buys it in For grown-ups → Unlock making songs. Google Play handles the payment. If Google Play is still waiting for the payment, Birdband says “Waiting for the payment to finish” and unlocks by itself when it goes through.

Restore purchase: the unlock belongs to the Google account that bought it. On a new phone, or after reinstalling, sign in to Google Play with that account, open For grown-ups → Unlock making songs and tap Restore purchase.

Deleting the free song doesn't make another song free.

I'm moving to a new phone. Will my songs come too?

Not by themselves. To keep your child's recordings private, Birdband leaves itself out of Android's backups and phone-to-phone transfers, so on a new phone Birdband starts empty.

To bring songs along, before you reset or give away the old phone:

  1. On the old phone, turn sharing on (For grown-ups).
  2. Share each song to the new phone with Quick Share, or save it as a file somewhere you can reach from the new phone.
  3. On the new phone, open each song file in Birdband (from the Files app).

Then turn sharing on again on the new phone if you want it (the PIN doesn't move), and use Restore purchase for the unlock.

How do I delete a song, or everything?

Open My songs, slide the song to the right and tap Delete. There's no undo, so Birdband asks first. Uninstalling Birdband deletes all its songs and settings from the phone. See our privacy policy for more.
